Young black girl, bust portrait, looking straight at you. Her hair is in a high natural updo, all tight coils bunched together, and right on top sits a big hot-pink bow. The hair coils stitch out individually and thats what makes this one impressive up close. Her dress is a soft teal-mint off-shoulder ruffle, the petite stud earrings are the same teal, she has full doe eyes with warm brown irises and soft pink lips. The whole face is done in warm caramel with careful shading under the cheekbones and jaw, its a proper multi-tone portrait.
Twelve colours in this one, it is a proper complex build. The digitising team at professional embroidery software spent real time on the hair. Theyve used dense satin columns at varying angles so the updo poof reads as three-dimensional. Skin shading uses 4 separate thread tones, darkest under the jaw and ears, lightest on the forehead. Full size is 7.51 wide by 5.16 tall, 50,777 stitches. Smallest is 3.51 wide, 21,352 stitches, still holds all the detail at that scale.
I got a message last february from a natural hair salon owner in Atlanta, she ran this on their aprons and the response was huge. She sent me photos and honestly the warm skin tones came out crazy clean on black apron fabric. Since then a girls confidence retreat in Birmingham ordered a run of 50 totes with the 4-inch size, the kids absolutely loved seeing themselves reflected like that in the design.
Stitch on white, cream, or black fabric, it works well across all three, the warm tones hold against both light and dark grounds. Use a cutaway stabiliser, density hits 1,310 and the hair section wont stay flat without that backing. Hoop the fabric tight and ease the speed on the hair coil section. Pair with a 40-weight polyester thread in the skin tones for best shading, the finer thread lets the multiple colour layers blend more naturally.
