Portrait embroidery is genuinely one of the harder things to digitise well and this one took me a few attempts to get right. Six colours sounds limited but thats kinda the point, getting realistic facial shading with six colours means the directional stitching has to do the heavy lifting. The face section uses short directional satin columns that shift angle across the contours, and the digitising software lets you really control those angle transitions. It took about three test stitchouts before I was happy with how the cheekbone area read.

Nine sizes from 3 in through 7.5 inches wide, 38,784 stitches at the largest, density 107. The head wrap is the highest-density area because those wrapped fold lines need solid satin fill to look structured. Use knit-friendly cutaway on any fabric, no exceptions, the density variation between the face and wrap sections is big enough that tearaway wont hold things flat through the whole stitch-out. The garment section at the bottom is lighter and simpler, just a flat satin fill in cream, so it stitches quick.

Stitch this on black, navy, burgundy or deep teal fabric for maximum contrast on the face tones. People have been buying it for cultural celebration projects, black history month displays, Kwanzaa themed gifts, and portrait art hoops. A customer sent me a photo last august of one she'd stitched on black velvet, honestly one of the best photos of my work Ive recieved, the deep brown face tones against velvet looked incredible. Velvet needs a topping layer and slower speed.

Avoid pale or white fabric for this one, those warm skin tones need contrast to read. Stitch on medium-weight woven fabric for the cleanest face details, heavy denim or canvas works well aswell. Press lightly with a pressing cloth after stitching.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
